How to Spice Up Stickers

I am a sucker for scrapbook stickers. However, I melt even more when I can find sensational stickers at reduced rates. End of the season sales and discontinued lots are excellent ways to score major savings on scrapbook stickers. That’s the good news. The bad news is that some deeply discounted stickers are not exactly the cutest of the bunch.

Still, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and there are ways to make the most of plain stickers. The following are just a couple of techniques that will help you spice up discontinued scrapbook stickers:

Paint Overlay

This technique works exceptionally well if you are happy with the shape of a particular sticker, but don’t like the color or pattern. To spice up the stickers place them onto a piece of cardstock and press down very lightly. You don’t want them to adhere to the cardstock all the way as you will have a tough time getting them off when you are done painting them. Next, select a color that complements your layout. Using a fine-tip brush, add the paint around the stickers as if you were wall stenciling. Be careful not to add too much paint, as it may bleed under the sticker. Once the paint is dry the stickers should take on an airbrushed look. Carefully remove the stickers from the cardstock and add them to your scrapbook page.

Layering

Small scrapbook stickers are cheap and fairly versatile. To make the most of these types of stickers, consider layering three or more of them together. Start by placing the largest sticker on the bottom. Next, layer the remaining stickers on either side of the largest one, making sure they overlap slightly. If you plan to use more than three stickers, it is best to layer in odd numbers such as five or seven to balance out the look.
