Husbands & Father’s Day

Father’s Day is rapidly approaching and it’s a day to celebrate having dad around. I didn’t grow up with a father so the first years that I have ever celebrated Father’s Day began when I was pregnant and then of course after our daughter was born. My husband’s relationship with his father was intensely valuable to him and his relationship with his daughter is even more valuable to him now.

Different Ways to Celebrate

For Father’s Day, we’ve done different kinds of gifts over the years from finger paintings my daughter has made to favored books, ties, robes and more. She likes creating artwork for him, but she also likes to sing to him and tell him stories. This year, for Father’s Day, we’re taking a different tact.

The celebration will begin with breakfast that I will help her fix for him. Eggs, bacon, sausage and toast and she can serve it to him. After that, she is going to present him with card options – the first card takes them to the water park together, the second card takes them out to the movies and the third card is the dinner and board games of his choice.

These gift ideas all came from her, because many of these are favored activities she loves to go and do with her daddy. She wanted to take him rock climbing, but her skills are quite up there yet and he’s still recovering from a broken arm – so we’ll lean towards the sports and activities that keep their feet on the ground.

Husbands & Fathers

Too often, as wives, we get frustrated with our husbands for not dealing with things the way we do. But husbands and fathers are not wives and mothers. They fulfill and offer a great deal to their relationships both with their spouses and their children that is measurably different, but by no means less. My advice is to worry less about how not unalike mothers that a father is and focus on the individuality of those differences.

I am looking forward to father’s day – despite my own inexperience with fathers, I think my husband is a great one. He’s made mistakes, but then so have I. The best barometer is our daughter’s delighted yell of “DADDY!” every time she sees him. He may not get the dancing or the dress up or the dolls, but he enjoys her and she enjoys him – and isn’t that what it’s all about?

What are you doing for Father’s Day this year?
