I Don’t Have Anything to Wear!

loveAre you rolling your eyes because your wife says she has nothing to wear, while standing in front of a completely full closet? I realize that there are exceptions, but many women tend to categorize their wardrobe as follows:

Clothes to wear around the house – this includes housework clothes, painting clothes, and she might venture out to check the mail this way.

Clothes to wear to the grocery store in the middle of the night – depending on the woman, this may or may not overlap with the previous category.

Clothes to wear to the grocery store during the day – these will be a little nicer, and probably won’t have paint splotches on them. But it is just the grocery store, after all.

Clothes to wear to the mall or department store – these clothes will be a little nicer yet.

Clothes to wear to an important business event – these are always nicer outfits altogether, with skirts or nice dress pants.

Clothes to wear to church – this category might overlap with the previous one.

Clothes to when with the mother-in-law comes to visit – there might be some overlap here, too, with the business category or the department store category.

Women need to feel comfortable in whatever they’re wearing for wherever they are. They hate to feel overdressed or underdressed. They don’t need twelve outfits in each of these categories, unless they’re a career woman and need a whole wardrobe of business clothes, but they do need a few things in each category so that no matter where they’re going, they feel appropriate.

Men also have their clothing categories, but theirs aren’t as precise as women’s. They have work clothes, work-out clothes, dress clothes, and some casual clothes. Their categories seem to blur more than women’s, too. And this explains why a man will look at a woman’s full closet and not understand it when she says she needs new clothes.

So guys, the next time your wife makes that statement, try to be patient with her, okay? She’s probably not trying to smash all your clothes into one tiny corner of the closet – although, that might be what happens – she’s just trying to make sure that she’s appropriate for each occasion in her life. And plus … clothes shopping is fun! If you came along once in a while, maybe you’d catch the spirit of it too …
