I Need a Hero!

hero I think it’s safe to say we all enjoy going to the movies and watching the heroes run through flaming fires to rescue the children trapped on the third floor. Our hearts beat faster when the star leaps into the water, swims across a river, and then rejoins his fiancee on her yacht just in time for their engagement party. We might even think we’d like to find a guy just like that. Wouldn’t it be something to find a man who could fight his way through a crowd of spies, ride a horse like there’s no tomorrow, rappel down a steep cliff, and do it all looking great in a tuxedo?

Well, yeah! I think we’d all go for that! However, there’s one thing to keep in mind—a movie hero is a very different thing from a real hero, and if we get our sights set on a man from the movies, a man who has a million-dollar wardrobe budget, a team of stuntmen, and a really clever makeup artist, we’re going to be sadly disappointed.

Instead, let’s talk about a real hero.

A real hero will put your feelings above his when he can tell that you’re genuinely upset or have had a bad day.

A real hero will sit by your side during thirty-six hours of labor, and then cry with you when the baby is born.

A real hero will go out in the dead of night to buy medicine for a sick child.

A real hero will carry in the groceries, even though a blizzard unexpectedly hit while you were shopping and it’s twelve below zero outside.

A real hero will stand by your side while you face opposition, quietly supporting you if you want to deal with it yourself, or defending your name and honor with his words and even his fists, if it comes to that.

A real hero will work overtime to pay for braces.

A real hero will serve his family, his country, and his God in any way he can.

It’s always fun to dream about being with a movie hero. But being married to a real hero is so much better. He’s flesh and blood, he’s not phony, and if you’ve got a man like the one I just described, you can count on him to burst through those walls of flames to come get you. He will be your hero, no matter what.
