In The World, But Not Of the World

I’ve heard this said quite a few times. I’ve had to sit and really think about what it means to be in the world, but not of the world. I think I’ve got it figured out!

If we are not supposed to be of the world, what are we supposed to be of? James tells us in chapter 4 verse 4 of the Bible that having a friendship with the world is being an enemy of God’s. Sounds serious. But when you look deeper, it’s not talking about having friends in the world or enjoying life, rather it’s talking about engaging in the ways of a sinful world. What we are supposed to be “of” is the Lord.

Hopefully, when we as Christians step out into the world, we are bringing something valuable into it. Jesus shares examples with us in Matthew chapter 5 of the Bible. In verse 13 we are described as salt of the earth. Salt gives flavor. In verse 14 we are described as the light of the world. We are to shine. Are you salt and light in the world?

Jesus Christ was our best example of what it means being in the world and not of the world. As we read about His life in the Bible we can be inspired. He walked among sinners and yet stayed grounded in truth. He remained without sin. He was never afraid to reach out and touch the hurting. He didn’t save his faith for church; rather He lived it daily shining His light on others.

I hope as you go about your day, you’ll consider the attitude of Christ. To be a Christian is to be Christ-like. There are plenty of people all around us that need Him, and you might just be “Jesus” that someone sees. May the Holy Spirit guide you as you go about your day.
