Inserting Attachments: Outlook Express

Want to insert attachments in Outlook Express? Whether it is a document or an image, there are three easy ways to insert an attachment into your e-mail message.

For this tip, we are working with Outlook Express 6 e-mail messages, but these tips may still apply to older versions of the software.

The first way to attach your document or image is by clicking on the attachment button. You will find this button on the new message toolbar. Clicking on this button causes a dialogue box to pop up. This box is the insert attachment box. It will ask you where to look for your file. Locate your file, and then click on the attach button at the bottom. You can also cancel your attachment request or make a handy shortcut to the file.

Another way to attach your document or image, for those of us older folk who are used to text instructions instead of buttons, just go up to the menu and choose Insert–File Attachment. This is a good technique to know, in case for some reason that attach button is not available. I tend to go to menus first for things anyway. Perhaps it is that age factor, or my background using professional graphic programs, where there were somethings that just couldn’t be done with buttons.

Finally, the last, and probably easiest, way to insert an attachment into your Outlook Express e-mail message is to simple drag and drop that file directly into the body of your e-mail message. This technique automatically turns that file into an attachment. I like this method, because it is the most intuitive; you are just moving something to where you need it. It also scores pretty high on the cool factor. Just try it at work while someone is standing nearby. You may here a “Oh, I didn’t know you could do that!” Instantly, you gain the reputation of the resident computer (or at least Outlook Express) guru.
