Introducing the New Members of the Household

A while back, I mentioned that I would be moving soon. Same complex, just a bigger apartment because I’m joining forces with some roommates.

Those roommates have cats.

We talked a lot about how to introduce my dogs, Moose and Lally, to their cats. We came up with plans to give the cats a safe space, and give them time to roam the apartment without dogs around. (More on this to come, I promise!)

For now, I wanted to introduce the new members of the household.

Kachiko is an eight year old snowshoe Siamese cat. She’s a sweet, mischievous little girl who likes to steal cheese and drink out of water glasses. Kachiko was picked out as a kitten from a friend’s litter, and has always been with my friends M. and S. But she’s definitely daddy’s girl. M. is her favorite person in the universe, and she loves to sit on his chest while he’s watching TV or on the computer.

Shiro is a seven year old mixed breed — maybe Russian blue or chartreuse in there, because he’s got the build and the coloring. His nickname is “chicken boo” for good reason — like my Lally, he can be a little skittish. He came from the shelter as a kitten, and probably didn’t have it very easy in his early days. When M. and S. adopted him, his whiskers had all been cut off and he was malnourished full of parasites. You wouldn’t know it today — he’s healthy and big (close to twenty pounds if I had to guess).

I’ve gotten to know both cats over the last two years, and they’ve both accepted me in their own way. Kachiko will occasionally sit on my lap; Shiro likes it if I come pet him in his hiding spots. We’ll see how they get along with the dogs, though. Neither one has had much experience with the canine persuasion… so this should be interesting!
