The grass is always greener on the other side, right? Not necessarily but many of us can relate to feeling this way. This can happen in any area of life and it can even happen when you have a home business.
When others hear that I work from home, without even knowing what I do, they tell me I am lucky. I think the reason people feel this way is because it sounds so luxurious. They envision you get to sleep in, work when you feel like it, take off whenever you want and stay in your jammies all day.
Actually, that doesn’t luxurious at all to me…but I know that some people think this way.
I love working from home. I make a pretty decent living as a writer and truly enjoy my work. But is the grass greener on the other side? Sometimes it can feel that way.
I think I mostly start to struggle with this when summer vacation is looming ahead. I know that it means my children are home, which is a good thing but it also means their friends will be here, too.
My children are teens so I don’t have to necessarily spend oodles of time with them but I do find myself dealing with arguments, noise, slamming doors, being asked to drive them here and there, and their friends eating our food.
So when I looked at some pictures on Facebook recently of the company that I work for, who just moved into a new office…well, I found myself thinking the grass might be greener on the other side.
The web content company I work for is in Florida and I live in Wisconsin. They moved to a new office and I was looking at pictures of their desks and space. I was thinking how nice it might be to go to work, to actually get away from the house. I was thinking of quiet and no one being able to ask me to drive them anywhere. I was thinking of co-workers, having other adults to talk to.
But then I looked at my office, my own space that my husband designed. I looked at my desk and the way I have it organized. I thought about the flexibility and working whatever hours I choose…no, the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.
I have my own set of unique challenges in working from home, just as others do who work outside the home. They also have their benefits, just as I have mine. Instead of looking at the other side, perhaps we need to learn to just appreciate the one we are on…and the fact that we can even earn a living no matter where it is done.
