January Clean-Up

How often do you scrapbook in the month of January?

The beginning of the month typically brings with it a mad dash to create memorable layouts from all the photos snapped over the holidays, but then there’s usually a lull until the next holiday, birthday or anniversary.

During your downtime you might consider cleaning and organizing your scrapbook area. The beginning of a new year is an opportunity to start fresh, get organized, and purge, purge, purge. For example, those leftover polka dot stickers you’ve been hanging on to for more than a year can probably get recycled or passed on to a friend if you feel bad trashing them. After all, if you haven’t found a way to use them to embellish a layout by now, it’s unlikely that 2012 will suddenly bring you the chance you’ve been waiting for.

January is an ideal time to remove scrapbook materials from their original packages and complete an inventory. Depending on how many items you already have, this process may take some time. However, you will be so glad to have an organized list of your scrapbook supplies for a litany of reasons. For starters, knowing the type and number of items you already have in your stash, you will be less likely to make duplicate purchases. This can help save you a ton of cash in the course of a year.

Another benefit of having your supplies neatly organized and accounted for is that you will have an easier time finding coordinating items for your page designs. An inventory also pays off if your supplies are stolen or damaged. If you have homeowner’s or renter’s insurance, you can claim the loss and receive reimbursement. Just remember to include details in your inventory, such as the item’s manufacturer, complete description (size, color, and other relevant characteristics), the price you paid, and the date you purchased the supply.
