Jesus, Our Passover Lamb

In Exodus chapter 12 the children of Israel were told to take a lamb for their household. Verse 5 says, “Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year…” The Israelites were instructed on how and when to kill it. They were to use the blood around the door frame of the home. In verse 13 the LORD tells us, “Now the blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you; and the plague shall not be on you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.”

That night the LORD passed striking the firstborn in Egypt; people and livestock. But those who obeyed the LORD and marked the doors of their home with the blood of the lamb were spared. This is a type and shadow of what was to come; where Jesus, our Lamb of salvation would be put to death.

Approaching the time of the Jewish Passover, Jesus Christ was slain as foretold in Isaiah 53:7, “He was oppressed and He was afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so He opened not His mouth.” The New Testament fulfillment of this prophecy can be found in Luke chapter 23. Jesus is spotless—without sin and he is the firstborn Son of God. In fact He is God manifested in the flesh (1 Timothy 3:16).

Christians celebrate this time most often referring to it as Easter since the celebration of the Christian Passover happened close to the pagan festival honoring the pagan goddess Ishtar (the goddess of sex, love and fertility). This began several hundred years ago as the Roman Church worked to convert pagans to Christianity by taking their festivals and putting Christian teachings into them (Please view my blog which further elaborates on this within the links below).

Our Lamb is not dead! He arose on the third day as said and was witnessed by over 500 people! Jesus is God and the only one capable of redeeming us from the eternal destruction we’ve made for ourselves by our sin. It is up to each one of us to make the decision whether or not we will mark the door posts of our heart with the sacrificial blood of Jesus Christ which will spare us from eternal death.

“Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened, for indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.” (1 Corinthians 5:7-8)
