Jodi Picoult

My first media post is going to be about one of my favorite authors, Jodi Picoult. I stumbled across her writing accidently when I picked up a book called “My Sister’s Keeper.” I was hooked. Jodi has a writing style that is warm and familiar, she makes you feel like you are reading about people you know. She weaves a story that is impossible to escape. Jodi’s writing style is unusual, she writes chapters alternating between characters so you never have to wonder why someone did a certain thing, that person tells you about their choices.

All of her books are about family, love and relationships but not in a love story way. Jodi has a way of taking an idea and spinning it in a way that you absolutely didn’t see coming. My favorite thing about her books is that I never know how they are going to end. I always think I do, I’m sure I know what’s going to happen, and then in the last chapter something totally unexpected happens and more often than not you are reaching for tissues.

Amazingly, when Jodi Picoult writes about relationships they are real. There is never a time when you think she is stretching things, or that’s not how someone would behave. She seems to know what lives in the human heart better than most writers.

The books she writes are generally about controversial issues, and she makes you see them in a different light. Her most recent book “I’ll Sing You Home” deals with evangelical Christianity, gay rights and reproductive technology. Those are three things that I never imagined reading a book about yet Jodi makes these people seem like friends and your heart goes out to them, no matter what your personal beliefs.

If you want a book that will tug your heart strings, pick up anything that Jodi Picoult has written. My favorite is still “My Sisters Keeper.” In this book Jodi makes us, as parents look at the choices we make for our children and just how far we will go to save them.

Read one of her books and you will be a fan. When you do, stop by and tell me which is your favorite and why.
