Keep Your Family Safe During a Heat Wave

As the country suffers a heat wave it is important to be prepared to deal with the rising temperatures in order to protect yourself and your family. There are a few simple things you can do to avoid suffering from the heat.

1) Avoid going out during the hottest part of the day. If you do go out be sure to drink plenty of water and do not participate in strenuous activities. Rest often and go inside as soon as possible. You can plan your outdoor activities for the early morning or the late evening.

2) Make sure that you have plenty of water on hand for your family. Even if you are only outside for a few minutes, it is important to drink plenty of liquids. You need water to produce sweat, and sweat will help you to cool off in hot temperatures.

3) Watch your family for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Signs of heat exhaustion include paleness, dizziness, nausea and fainting. Their temperature may slightly elevated. You will need to cool them down and hydrate them. If they do not respond get them to a hospital. If the person is not sweating, has a high temperature, is unconscious, or having seizures get them to a hospital immediately.

4) It is also important to watch your power consumption during a heat wave. Avoid using the dryer during the hottest times of the day. You should also avoid baking during the hottest time of day as well. If you can minimize the amount of electricity you use, you will help to prevent the rolling blackouts, which are so common during summer months.

The heat can be a difficult thing to deal with. Humidity is another factor to take into consideration. Pay attention to the weather report and plan your activities accordingly.
