Keeping it Small on Purpose

I often write about growth and “building up” a home-based business. But, many of us started our home businesses because we wanted to work on a much smaller scale. While we many want to boost our income, one of our main focuses may just be to keep our business small, personal and manageable—and that is absolutely all right!

There is no law that states that all of us have to aspire to building a corporation or a conglomeration from our home-based businesses. Many of us actually never even intend for our businesses to be our main source of income—they are small, “on the side” or part time operations that we are using for extra income, personal development, or for some other reason and we never intend to leave our outside employment or careers.

Again, this is all just fine. One of the fabulous things about starting a home-based business is that we get to define for ourselves what we want it to be. We can even change our mind as we go along and decide we want to make it bigger or smaller, expand to take on additional products or services, or let go of things we don’t want to do any more in order to do something else. I know one person who started out with a home-based barber shop, and then after a few years, got her real estate license and now is selling real estate full time and cutting hair on the side.

Managing growth does not have to mean trying to make the business bigger it can also mean trying to keep things small and manageable. You get to decide, and you get to define your business as it suits you and your lifestyle. There is absolutely nothing wrong with keeping your home business small on purpose.
