Kids and Simple Gardening

Even if you don’t have a lot of space, indoors or out, you and your kids can put together a small container garden. Even if you just do one or two plants, your kids are likely to think it’s pretty cool.

Herb Gardening

You can get your kids started with a small herb garden. It isn’t difficult and your kids will have fun with it. Another good thing about growing herbs is that they do not usually take long to begin sprouting. Your kids will get to see some results before too long, so herb gardening may keep their interest longer than sowing other types of plants. Just fill a small container will good soil and plant seeds according to directions (many types of herbs only need to be planted ¼ – ½” deep). Gently cover with soil, water lightly, and place in the sun.

Planting Flowers

You and your kids can also plant flowers in small containers. You can either do this to start planting early and keep them indoors until the weather is stable so you can transplant them outdoors later, or you can start them and put them into larger indoor planters later. Check the seed package to see how large the flowers will get, so you don’t select any that are too large for the amount of space you have. A single marigold per container is a good example. They are not only hearty plants but they are also bright and colorful. Many different types of flower seeds are as simple to plant as herbs, as described above.

Patio Gardening

Have you seen patio gardening kits and baskets? You can pick up a kit or put together your own patio garden. Cherry tomatoes are a popular type for patio gardening and can be grown from hanging baskets. Flowers, herbs, and fruits can also be grown on the patio, porch, or deck as long as they get the appropriate amount of sunlight.

Do you think your kids would like to try their hands at gardening?
