Kinds of Part Time Jobs – Part 1

When you decide to take a part time job, it can be overwhelming when you first start out. There are so many places that you could apply, but you also wonder if they are hiring and if it would be a good place to work. Below, I have outlined several of the most common (and easiest to find) part time jobs along with their pros and cons.

Pizza Delivery

With this type of job, you would work for a pizza franchise delivering pizzas to customers and possibly also helping to make the pizzas or doing other tasks around the restaurant. Most employees will work in the evenings and on the weekends.

Pros:
•You receive tips daily, so you have immediate cash in hand
•The job is relatively simple to do and not very stressful

Cons:
•You will have to use your own vehicle
•Gas prices are climbing and you will spend a lot at the pump – often using one tank of gas every day or two

Grocery Store Clerk

These positions usually involve cashier duties, stocking, straightening shelves and customer service. Employees will work a variety of shifts, but likely have to be willing to work evenings and weekends.

Pros:
•You have the opportunity to interact with people
•The job is relatively easy to learn
•The employee discount that is often offered can help to reduce your grocery bill

Cons:
•You do need to be willing to work evenings, weekends and most holidays
•You may sometimes have to deal with unhappy customers
•You will likely be on your feet for the entire shift

Fast Food Restaurant
This position involves preparing food, serving customers and doing general tasks around the restaurant. Hours are often around the clock, so shifts may vary.

Pros:
•Often these places are very flexible with the shifts you can work, though you may still need to work evenings and weekends
•These places have trouble keeping employees, so if you are reliable and a good worker, you will be very well appreciated and may even get promoted.

Cons:
•Some people do not like to do food preparation
•You will be on your feet your entire shift
