Labor Day is such a bittersweet holiday for me. Whereas I love the extra day of play, I hate that the weekend is the unofficial farewell to summer. Still, there’s no better way to bid the season goodbye than with an end of the summer bash for all your family and friends.
Picnics: Whether you are entertaining a small group or a huge clan, picnics are a great outdoor activity. Grab your checkered tablecloth and plan a seasonal menu complete with fried chicken, watermelon, potato salad, grilled corn, and lemonade. Don’t forget to bring along some sports equipment to work up an appetite. Think bats, balls, mitts or Frisbees.
Pool Party: Labor Day weekend may be one of the last times to host a pool party. Plan some fun in the sun with games, tropical libations and a barbecue. You can keep the menu simple by grilling up some burgers and topping them with your favorite condiments. If you have a bigger budget, then host the party at night and add some white lights to frame the pool. You could also have a fancier menu with items like grilled steak, lobster and shrimp.
Football Frenzy: Labor Day marks the start of the football season. Get into the spirit by throwing a tailgate themed Labor Day party. Have your guests wear their favorite team’s jerseys and serve traditional football-related foods such as chicken wings, pizza and chips and dip.
Stargazer: Who says Labor Day has to be all about the sun and slippers? If you are entertaining a smaller group, then go fancy with an elegant outdoor gathering complete with a slew of white candles on decorated tables. You could also string white lights and white paper lanterns around the seating area. If you don’t have a cap on your budget, then consider hiring a live band to perform for your guests.
