Ladies, Who Do You Want?

In June, I wrote a blog called What Do Women Want? and attempted to address the question that many women ask themselves over the years, what do we want in a potential mate? What attracts us to one man and not to another? For example, do you find Hugh Jackman attractive? Are you more interested in Brad Pitt? Or is George Clooney the man for you?

When it comes to romance and relationships, answering just what do women want is not the easiest of questions. Why is it so hard? Easy, not all women are the same and what appeals to one woman is not the same as another woman. This is probably a good thing, because if all women wanted the same thing, we’d have a lot more problems with women all wanting the same man – and that’s enough of a problem at times anyway.

So asking who do you want is a very subjective question and the answer is equally subjective. What I find attractive in a man is not going to be what my neighbor does or the woman across the street. Simply put who we want is more than just a listing of qualities or the possession of physical characteristics or excess of personality. We often think of people as having a type – some women may prefer the brooding poet or the adventurous hunter and still others prefer the comedian or the nurturer – still – these are just examples of trying to type cast men into a part that we would like them to play.

The truth is, you can be completely attracted to a person that you do not necessarily love or that you do not necessarily want to settle down with. Our crushes on movie stars for example, we can’t possibly know these actors no matter how many tabloid stories there are about them and their lives. We view them through a softened lens because we don’t have to see their flaws and yet – that same softened affection can turn quickly when their flaws are demonstrated in public whether it’s a broken love affair or drunken comments.

I know plenty of people who adored Tom Cruise, but found their interest waning or even downplayed over all the publicity in the last year and the same can be said for Mel Gibson. Yet Brad Pitt weathered the storm of his broken marriage to Jennifer Aniston and subsequent pairing with Angeline Jolie.

So, ladies, who do you want?
