Learning Styles

Each individual has there own way of learning whether if its one specific way or a combination of a few, no two people learn each concept the same way to retain the information. An easy way to describe a learning style is the way you learn.

Which style do you learn best with?

There are three learning styles which are most often described by students and teachers.

• Auditory Learning Style
• the Visual Learning Style
• the Tactile/Kinesthetic Learning Style

The auditory learner learns best when the material is spoken to them. Think about a college lecture hall or the teacher who would stand in front of the classroom and teach all day. (I always imagine Charlie Brown’s teacher as I am not an auditory learner.) Small and large discussion groups work very well for these types of learners and the information is processed into the brain and can be retained when needed.

The visual learner learns best when a lesson is presented in a verbal format with visual devices like pictures or diagrams. For example, if a teacher is lecturing and using visual props to explain or help her lesson, this would help a visual learner. Besides the overhead or power point presentation, while student is being taught they are looking at an explanation using two forms of their senses which work well in conjunction with each other.

The tactile / kinesthetic learner learns best when a hands-on learning approach is used. Anytime a lesson can be physically touched in order to learn about it is the best. Interactive or life sized board games where the student acts as a game piece also is considered a tactile strategy. This helps the student focus on the lesson being taught as well as keeps their attention to whose turn it is to go next.

The learning style which works best will stay with you throughout your entire life. Embrace it and move forward to success.
