Let the Summer Travel Chaos Begin

left

Ready… set… travel.

Friday kicks off the start of the summer travel season.

Where are you planning to spend Memorial Day weekend?

According to AAA, nearly 35 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home during the long holiday weekend, a slight increase over last year.

Interestingly, even with the exorbitant price of gas, AAA is predicting that more than 30 million people plan to drive to their vacation destination. That means roughly nine out of ten holiday travelers will take to the nation’s roadways during the Memorial Day weekend.

If you are planning to travel with kids, who are prone to carsickness, forget about packing books and videos. Rather, make sure your queasy offspring sit in the middle seat so they can focus on the road in front of them instead of objects whizzing by on the side of the road. To keep your carsick prone child from suffering the boredom blues play some classic travel games such as 20 Questions and I Spy.

To compensate for the atrociously high amount of money they are spending on fuel, AAA says 35 percent of respondents to its travel poll revealed that they would be staying at lower priced hotels or bunking with friends or family rather than pay for a room. It’s not a bad idea, especially if you are working with a tight travel budget. According to AAA’s Leisure Travel Index, hotel rates for luxury properties are up eight percent from last year to about $160 per night. Meanwhile, if you plan to stay at a moderately priced hotel, expect to pay 10 percent more than you did last Memorial Day.

Of course, there are those who are willing to pay a bit more to get to their Memorial Day weekend destination faster than by car. AAA says more than 2.5 million travelers will fly during the holiday weekend, a 5.5 percent decrease from last year’s 2.7 million air travelers.
