Life With a Working Dog

You may have heard (or read) that working breeds like having something to do. This is true! They are intelligent, active dogs that can get bored (and destructive) easily.

My Lally Beeber is a very hardworking dog. She slaves over a hot squeaky ball all day, and yet finds the time to help me with my chores. For example, Lally helped me make my bed this morning:

Note the suspicious green ball in the upper right hand corner of the picture. Evidence at the scene of the “chores”. Note also the suspicious tan butt in the lower left hand corner of the picture — sitting on a pillow!

Unfortunately, Lally’s idea of making the bed and MY idea of making the bed are two very different things. For me, I like to pull the covers up semi-neatly, and have all the pillows arranged at the head of the bed. Lally likes to flop down on the pillows and squiggle until the covers are mushed up at the foot of the bed, or even better yet, on the floor. She also likes the pillows to be creatively arranged — one or two on the floor with the blankets is a nice abstract design.

Have you seen this furry bed maker? Watch out, she may help you make your bed next!

For Moose, his area of chore expertise is the kitchen. If you’re cooking anything, Moose is at your side to help. And by help, I mean eat whatever it is you are making. And clean up any stray bits that happen to fall on the floor. Moose is also skilled at cleaning furniture. He likes to sprawl out on the leather couch in the den and lick it. His compulsive licking is also good for cleaning plates when the dishwasher is broken.

Get your pups involved with household chores! They may not get done exactly to your high standards, but it will give your furry friends something interesting to do.
