Life With Curly Hair

I used to hate my curly hair. I was so envious of friends with straight hair, even when they had perms! My hair was wild and poofy and unmanageable… and it still is. These days, I’ve learned to love my curly hair.

In general, curly hair tends to dry out easily. It can be more brittle than straight hair, and can be prone to frizzing. Regardless of length, you may spend more time taking care of your curly hair than your straight haired friends spend on theirs. So how can you make your hair care routine easier?

  • Some hair-care experts suggest limiting shampooing, because it can take natural oils out of your hair. However, there are many shampoos available that are mild enough for daily use if you like to shampoo every day.
  • Try a shampoo and conditioner designed specifically for curly hair. You may or may not like how it makes your hair feel, but there are lots of products out there to try!
  • Use a conditioner every time you shampoo your hair. Curly hair often needs more moisture than straight hair, and the conditioner can help cut down on frizziness.
  • Try a leave-in conditioner a few times a week — even every other day. It will help your hair retain moisture and cut back on frizz. A leave-in conditioner can even work as well as some styling products to keep your hair in place.
  • Try a deep conditioner once a month to help keep your scalp and hair hydrated.
  • Let your hair air-dry, rather than using a blow dryer. This will reduce frizziness and dryness.
  • Detangle your hair while you’re still in the shower with conditioner on. This will help reduce breakage and make things a lot easier. Use your fingers and/or a wide toothed comb.
  • Avoid narrow toothed combs and brushes — they can cause breakage and frizziness. Use wide toothed combs and picks instead.
  • Don’t play with your hair. This is a tough one! The more you touch your hair, the more friction you’ll cause. Friction causes frizziness and tangling.
