Looking Back at 2011

In just about 48 hours we will close the book on 2011. However, before you make like Wal-Mart and start working on Valentine’s Day preps, now is a good time to look back on the year that was.

Creating year in review layouts is a tradition for me. I love selecting memorable moments from the last 365 days and putting them together in a classic page design. Since the passage of time is a vital part of any New Year’s celebration, consider using time-related embellishments in your layout. For example, I recently printed out an image of a large clock face and plan to remove the numbers and replace them with the months of the year. Once that’s complete I will add photos from each month of the year in the spaces. Since this is a large project, I will have to use two pages, though you could fit it on one page if you use smaller pictures.

To fill the clock, look through your photo collection for some of the following:

January: Winter scenes and kids playing in the snow

February: Valentine’s Day shots

March: Spring-themed images; special events such as weddings or baptisms

April: Easter pictures

May: Generations of moms

June/July/August: Summer photos of family picnics or sporting events, plus vacation pictures taken at the beach or camping

September: Back-to-school photos

October: Pictures of seasonal activities like apple picking or trick-or-treating

November: Thanksgiving gatherings

December: Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa shots

In order to create a cohesive looking clock, make sure you use a simple background for your timepiece and clear lettering for the months. Also, you’ll want to leave space on either side of the clock to write journal entries detailing the events featured in the photos.

Other embellishments that would enhance a New Year’s Eve theme include stickers of confetti; stamps in the shape of champagne bottles and glasses; die cuts of Baby New Year and exploding fireworks.
