Love At First Sight? Exercise can be a passion

It’s true that you may never find that perfect routine. You may not discover the workout or piece of exercise equipment that fills you with the first flush of success. Love at first sight and exercise are not usually joined at the hip. However, just because you may never feel passionate about exercising and fitness does not mean you can’t enjoy it.

First and foremost, no matter what age group you fall in, check with your physician. It’s good to know if there are any conditions that may prohibit you from performing your exercise regularly. It’s a good idea to get a routine physical and identify any troublesome areas in your diet as well. For example, if your cholesterol is too high – your physician may recommend some easy and effective changes to your diet to help improve that condition.

Once you’ve talked to your physician – then it’s time to put the following to work. This is not a perfect plan, it may or may not help you discover the exercise fitness program that you will enjoy – but it will help you eliminate some and explore others. Sometimes, exploring can be as much if not more fun than discovering the right workout routine.

What have you always wanted to do?

I can answer this question – I’ve always wanted to dance on the stage. I studied dance for years and I loved it. A bad knee forced me out. But knowing that I love dance makes me look at dancing classes for more ideas on what I want to take. There are plenty of adult hip hop aerobics classes and several dance studios in my area offer everything from couples ballroom dancing to tap to ballet programs. Who says you have to do step aerobics to get into shape? If you love dancing, take a dance class. If you’ve always wanted to ice skate, take an ice skating class. Expand your mind and explore your options.

Find A Workout Buddy

Hands down, the best way to make sure you have staying power and someone to talk to is to find someone to work out with. Whether it is a friend, a relative or a spouse – having a workout buddy is statistically proven to help your stick to it when it comes to working out. They can also help you overcome hurdles because while you may not be competing against each other – they can and will be supportive of the challenges you are facing.

Log-on or Pick up the phone

We have message boards here at Families.com, we have bloggers and we have a growing community that is ready to help support you. That’s the great thing about a workout buddy or a fitness partner – you don’t necessarily have to be in the same place. In fact, writing up your experiences every day and posting them to a message board generates not only responses to what you are going through, but also provides you with a record of what you’ve been doing.

Fitness is more than a hobby and it offers more than physical health benefits. What you get out of it will be what you invest into it. So if you’re looking for some support, looking for some ideas or just plain looking to ask some questions – check out your options and somewhere down one of these paths – you will discover the fitness program that is right for you.
