Maintaining Fitness in the Holiday Season

The holiday season is fast approaching and this is the hardest part of the year for many people to stick to their exercise routine as family comes to visit, holiday shopping, cold and stormy weather and more can really diffuse how we look at our fitness goals and our fitness workout.

Stressful is one of the best ways to describe the holiday season. Stress doesn’t need to be caused by negative events but the anxiety surrounding the holidays, the parties, the commitments and the shopping can be pretty stressful on the body and the mind. It can make it hard to sleep, it can make you restless and it can even give you indigestion.

Maintaining your fitness program and exercising regularly can bring you relief from the constant stress and hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol in the body. Sticking to your fitness goals can be pretty tough throughout the year, but when the holidays arrive – your busy life suddenly becomes busier than you can believe – exercise may be the first thing that falls by the wayside, but it should be the last.

Exercising regularly can help prevent holiday stress from taking over your life and keep your mind and body in harmony. The holly jolly Christmas, won’t be so holly or jolly is you are too stressed to really enjoy it.

The other great thing about maintaining your fitness workout is that you’re already halfway to your personal goals at New Year’s whether you are making a New Year’s resolution or not and don’t you want to look great in your New Year’s dress and eat your Christmas dinner without fear of a few extra pounds? Regular workouts and exercise means you don’t have to skip the holiday pie for dessert or feel immense guilt over an extra helping of turkey and stuffing.

The challenge of maintaining your fitness is important – because it puts you first and putting yourself first, let’s you take care of everyone and every thing else that you need to do. This can make your holiday season a great experience for you and your family – so don’t skip your workout.

How are you planning to maintain your fitness in the coming holiday season?
