Make a Magazine or Folder Holder

This is a good project for bigger kids as well as little ones. These holders are great for storing small books, magazines, school folders, and notes. You and your kids will have fun making them and they will also help kids keep things organized.

Your kids can decorate these holders using their favorite colors, items that coordinate with their bedroom decor such as fabric, wallpaper, or border, or posters and pictures of their friends or their favorite bands and celebrities.

Items Needed:

  • Boxes (large cereal or laundry detergent boxes)
  • Scissors
  • Spray paint
  • Craft paint
  • Paintbrushes, sponges, or rags
  • Pictures or photos
  • Wallpaper or fabric
  • Tape, decal, ribbon

You will need your household scissors instead of safety or school scissors. Start by making sure the inside of the box is clean. Next, remove the top or bottom of the cereal box. From the middle of the opening on one side, cut the box at an angle until you reach just below the center of the box. Cut a straight line across the front then repeat the angle on the other side, until it meets the straight edge across the front.

Magazine Folder Holder

The edges may be a bit rough, so you may want to cover them with masking tape, decal material, or glue on some ribbon or fabric to cover the rough edge.

Paint a solid background color on the holder with spray paint or craft paint (spray paint will be shinier, but craft paint dries much more quickly). Paint the inside in a contrasting color. When dry, let your kids decorate it. This is the fun part. Soon, they will have a cool place to stash their favorite reading materials, sketchpads, notebooks, or other paper items that tend to create clutter in a room.

When the magazine or folder holder is complete (and dry) fill it up and start making another one!
