My daughter is the antithesis of a girly girl. Forget about dressing up like a shimmery snow queen or glittery glam, perfectly Pinkalicious princess for Halloween. No way! Rather, my girl craves flesh and willingly dresses the part to satiate her carnivorous desires. This year she has moved on from being a bone-gnashing lizard king and morphed into a man-eating shark. Her Halloween getup is designed to make it look as though she is being devoured by a ravenous shark.
No gender stereotyping going on in my house.
Not surprisingly it is easier than ever to find disgustingly gross costumes for Halloween trick-or-treating. However, if you have a very young child who is engrossed, rather than grossed out, by creepy crawly critters, then you walk a fine line when trying to find an age appropriate costume that doesn’t go overboard in the vulgar category.
Relying on costume manufacturers to produce creepy yet cute costumes for the five and under set is not always a wise choice. However, every once in a while you’ll hit the jackpot. For example, the year my daughter wanted to trick-or-treat dressed as a spider; I was able to find super cute options at Ty’s Toy Box. In fact, at the time, the store carried the entire collection of Miss Spider costumes.
Most parents would agree that if you are going to have your tot dress up as an eight-legged insect, then it’s probably better to find a costume that’s more fun than freaky. The Miss Spider costume is the prefect mix of delightful and disgusting. The base of the costume is a fleece jumpsuit with Miss Spider’s distinctive black and yellow design. It also comes with an attached plush headpiece complete with Miss Spider’s little pink hat and a huge face cut-out, so your tot can breathe easy. Adorable dangly legs are attached to the back; far enough away that your toddler won’t trip on them, but close enough to the sides that you can still tell what your kid is dressed up as.
If you have multiple children who love arachnids and other creepy crawlers, then consider purchasing the entire Miss Spider costume collection. Bounce’s costume is a romper-style blue getup with wiggly antennas and a metallic sheen. Dragon’s costume is a dark purple and light lavender fleece jumpsuit with an attached plush headpiece and big buggy eyes. Dragon’s getup also comes with attached dangly legs, plus plush wings and a tail. Meanwhile, Squirt’s green and lavender fleece jumpsuit comes with an attached plump headpiece and multiple dangly legs. Finally, Shimmer’s fleece jumpsuit comes in vibrant teal and magenta with a plush headpiece, green antenna, and attached mustard-yellow wings.
Halloween can be a challenging time for parents, especially when you are forced to make creepy look cute. To spare tears on the special occasion I would consider planning well in advance, or the crying may be coming from you, as you scrape together a handcrafted version of your kid’s desired costume in the waning minutes before trick-or-treating begins.
