Making Decisions with God’s Guidance

How do you decide what you should do with your time, or what tasks you should take on in your church? Since we’ve been in our new house on the South Coast and even for a time before we moved, my husband and I have been praying that God will clearly show us what He would have us do in our new church and in this community and show us those activities he would have us be part of.

Hospitality was one area we identified as one God asking us to work on. That we make our home available for God’s use. Since we had already been to several people’s places for meals, on Sunday we invited people over for lunch. It was nothing fancy – just simple meat and salad followed by cake and coffee. The important part was not stressing out to provide a feast, but spending time getting to know our visitors better.

We’ve also joined a bible study group where we’re currently studying Job. Already that has proved to be a blessing, as we share around God’s Word and in prayer.

Then last Sunday, as we gathered for a tea or coffee on the verandah after church, the man who’d been sitting in front of me in church said, ‘Do you like to sing?’ Only one answer to that – I have always loved to sing. My role in my previous church involved coordinating the music roster and leading the singing on a rostered basis. He then asked if I’d be interested in coming along to a group, Sing Australia that meets at Vincentia. I found out a little about the type of songs they sang and then said I’d see him there next time they met. I came home excited at the prospect.

Last night I went along and was welcomed by a group of around 25 people. (I always find it hard to judge numbers.)

After a few warm up exercises we started to sing. Most of the songs. which included folk pop, songs from musicals like Les Miserables, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, were familiar which was good. A couple I’d never heard of before, especially ‘We’ve done us proud’ by Graeme Conners, which basically is a testament to the people who have shaped and live in Australia.

Fortunately, since I’ve never learned to read music, I have a good ear and picked up the unfamiliar songs easily. I spent a great couple of hours singing, and yes, I’ll definitely be going back next week. Surely music and song are two of God’s great blessings! And they are blessings we can share. This choir regularly sings at nursing homes, church functions and other community events. I’m looking forward to being a part of Sing Australia and feel sure this is one part of God’s answer to the prayer about activities to be involved in, in my new community.
