Making Space for a Home Office

If you would love to create a home office, but you are limited for space, try one of these simple, space saving ideas:

Make a Closet into an Office

An average size closet in the guest room, a second closet in your bedroom, or even a linen closet can be turned into a home office quickly and easily. Remove all items that are currently being stored in the closet. Next, remove hanging rods and any lower shelves. Leave high shelves in place, as they will come in handy for storing office supplies and other work related items. Install a simple shelf at a comfortable desk height, approximately 28-32″ from the floor. For an average size closet, the shelf should run the entire width of the closet to make sure you have plenty of surface space. If you are going to add heavy equipment such as a computer monitor, it is a good idea to add legs beneath the desk for extra support. Find a chair that slides comfortably under the desk. You can simply close the door and place the chair in a corner when your office is not in use.

Make an Armoire into an Office

The premise is similar to the closet transformation, only this option should be even simpler. Many styles of armoires have adjustable shelves inside, as well as drawers and lots of extra storage. You may be able to create an office in a matter of minutes by simply emptying the armoire, adjusting the shelves, and filling the cabinet and drawers with your office paraphernalia. A decent sized armoire should be able to accommodate all of your computer equipment, and drawers are handy for stashing files, folders, and office supplies. Again, you can simply close the doors when not in use to hide away your work. An office armoire also makes a great portable solution for families who are frequently on the move.
