Making the Most of a Vendor Event

You booked your business at a vendor event, now what? Working your first event can be a little nerve wracking. You want to be prepared but often have no idea what to expect. Here are some tips:

.) Find out before hand if the other businesses do cash and carry. If so, you will want to have a few items to buy off the table. Purchase items which are hot sellers so if you have to fill orders from your inventory you can. Do not let yourself get stuck with a ton of product. Some events are more order taking shows.

.) Do a drawing. You can draw for a product or gift certificate. On your slip, be sure to get their contact info and have a place for them to let you know if they want to host a workshop or would like more info your biz. Email addresses are another must have!

.) Be prepared with a tablecloth or two and signage. Know ahead of time how much space you will need and have. You want to look presentable. Some vendors will bring boxes to create levels. Others have display furniture. Do not forget tools to hang up your signs like tape or pins.

.) If you need a lot of space, TV trays work great to give you some more room in front of your booth. Card tables and bookshelves can come in handy as well. Some use baskets on the floor in front of their table to put product in.

.) Bring enough items to display, but don’t clutter. If you are unsure of how much you will need, set up at home. It’s OK to take too much. You do not have to display it all.

.) Always stand up, never sit. NEVER be caught with your nose in a book! First impression is important. If it looks like you are bored, often people will pass on by. Interact with your booth, smile and invite people in.

.) Ask your potential customers to register for your drawing, they may not see it sitting there. Remember to write notes on the back of the lead slip so when you follow up you can customize your call.

.) Don’t be disappointed. I know this can be hard, but every event is different. Remember that most of these events are not selling events, but opportunities to network and meet future hostesses, customers and team members.

.) Most importantly, HAVE FUN!!!! No matter what, if you have fun it is always worth it.
