Making Your Own Rubber Stamp Ink

Since I recently explained how to make your own rubber stamps at home, I thought it might be beneficial to include a few ways that you can create rubber stamping ink at home as well. I’ve tried it, and was pleased with the end results.

It saves money in the long run, and you can make as much or as little as you need. In addition you can mix colors and create some that you might not be able to purchase at the store. Or you can match the ink color to colors in the layout you are working on. I think making your own ink is not only a great way to save but also to be sure you get what you want.

Making stamp ink requires you to have a protected surface to work with. The ink will stain so you need to watch to be sure none splashes or gets on anything that you don’t want stained. I recommend using newspaper or towels to protect your work surface.

You will need:

Powdered Clothes Dye
1/4 Teaspoon Alcohol
5 Tablespoons Glycerin
1 travel soap box
1 foam rubber (fine grained)

Once you’ve chosen the color of dye that you would like to use, you will need to mix that dye with alcohol to the consistency of a thin cream. Next you will add glycerin and stir until it is well blended. This makes enough ink to replenish your ink pad several times. You can use an ink pad that you already have, or you can create your own by using a travel soap box and a piece of foam rubber cut to fit. To actually make the stamp pad you will need fine grained foam rubber and a small plastic box with lid. I recommend using a travel soap box. Cut the foam rubber to fit inside the plastic box. Now all you have to do is pour the ink over the stamp pad or foam rubber pad. Spread the ink evenly over the top with a tongue depressor or knife.

Now you have a great way to save on rubber stamp ink and get the colors you need most! Have fun!
