Marriage Tips: Playfulness

Everyone needs some fun in his or her life. When you let go and enjoy playfulness with your spouse, the two of you have a chance to enjoy each other’s company in a way that many marriages are missing. Have fun together. Enjoy simple things and childhood pleasures. Eat ice cream together. Blow bubbles. Laugh. Joke. Play!

The things that we found most pleasurable as children were often the simplest. How many children have you seen find great joy upon receiving a gift? How many have you seen put the toy aside and find even greater joy in playing with the box the gift came in?

It’s the simple pleasures that most often make us happy. You may enjoy watching that beautiful big screen TV or driving your luxury car, but those things soon lose their novelty. Ice cream never does.

Chase each other. Sneak up on your spouse with a squirt gun. Build a sandcastle. Skip stones across a pond or explore a path through the woods. Neck at the movies. Have a watermelon eating contest. Play checkers, or Battleship, or Old Maid. Watch cartoons together. It’s even okay to be silly.

Laughter really is the best medicine, and having a good giggle together makes everything seem right with the world. People who laugh often even tend to be healthier. Experiencing childlike joy brings us back to those carefree days when our biggest concern was what was for dessert. Playfulness is a great release from the constant sense of responsibility and the pressure that builds up in the adult world.

Playfulness is also sexy. Remember how much fun the two of you had when you were dating? Making each other smile, laugh, and feel joy, was one of the most important things at the time. It still should be. No matter how busy you are, you can always find at least a few moments to play together and have some fun.
