Given the emphasis on divorce recently on the marriage blog, I thought I’d share a few examples of marriages that have stood the test of time. Our local paper this week had an item about Marjorie and Frank Thompson, who this week celebrated 64 years of marriage.
The pair met initially at their church’s youth group where romance blossomed. Although they lived for years in Berry, they now reside at Osborne house. Osborne House is a hostel and nursing home that our choir attends regular attends. After 64 years Marjoie and Frank can still say they ‘are very happy,’ which is lovely to hear.
The other couple, Laurie and Faith Kettlewell, has only chalked up 50 years so far. They have lived in Nowra for 47 years of their 50 year marriage. The couple is still involved in various activities in the community like tennis and Lydian Singers. Both Laurie and Faith are still busty helping others. Laurie each year raises money for CBM which seeks to help those affected by blindness. After many years in their church as a leader of Girls’ Brigade, Faith is now a grandmother figure for the children at their church’s playgroup.
The third example is actually a tale of two lasting marriages. Lorraine and Geoff Whatmore celebrated not just their 50th anniversary recently, but their daughter Lynne and her husband Wayne celebrated their 25th anniversary on the same weekend. Unlike Lynne’s parents who anniversary was March 3o0 Lynne and Wayne’s was March 31. Then Rachel, Wayne and Lynne’s daughter, chose March 31 for her wedding date to Mason Mawer. However they are only relative newcomers to marriage, as they were celebrating their second anniversary, but they have great examples to follow.
The triple anniversary celebration party was extra special because it was only the second time over a period of 20 years that the whole family had been able to gather as Lynne’s sister, Sallyanne, has been in England for 20 years.
