Memorial Day Military Scrapbooks

It’s unfortunate that many of us only consider honoring our military heroes when major holidays roll around. I am guilty as charged. Often I lose sight of the fact that there are tens of thousands of men and women overseas fighting for my family’s freedoms while their own spouses, children and parents eagerly wait for their safe return.

Yesterday I popped into my local scrapbook store to purchase a few last embellishments for my daughter’s end of the school year scrapbook and I passed by a large display of military-themed scrapbook supplies. The owner of the store has a nephew in the Armed Forces, and as a tribute to his bravery, she created a memory book featuring a bunch of photos of him at home and stationed abroad, as well as a few mementos he collected during his tours of duty.

It got me thinking beyond the last days of school and more about the upcoming Memorial Day holiday. What an amazing gesture it would be to help a family with a deployed solider or returning veteran to create a scrapbook to honor his or her time protecting our country.

Fortunately, there are a number of companies that carry an extensive line of military-themed scrapbook supplies, including American Croppers. The company features 12×12 camouflage albums that are covered in a military fatigue pattern and Armed Forces’ patches. The album’s layouts can be embellished with 3-D stickers in the shape of stars, helicopters, lighthouses and flags.

In addition, there are a number of resources that list amazing titles for military-themed layouts. K and Company sells a navy blue and gold memory album kit with a die cast Coast Guard medallion on the cover of the book, stickers, die cuts and title suggestions, including: Anchors Away, Everyday Heroes, Army Prayer, Semper Paratus, and Heroes in Action.

Have you ever made a military-themed scrapbook? What other items did you include in the book?
