Memorial Day Yard Sales

Today is a great day to go visit those yard sales, garage sales and tag sales!
Believe it or not, extended holiday weekends can yield plenty of sales and plenty of bargains. Memorial Day, the unofficial start to summer, is a great day to take advantage of the sales in your area.

You might think that everyone has gone down to the beach for the weekend, but you would be surprised how so many people take advantage of this time to clean out their houses and get a fresh start on summer. With the windows open, summer parties happening, and company coming in and out, people can’t hide in their homes with their clutter.

And if you area is known for its tourism, you can be sure that there will be people out trying to take advantage of all of the vacation traffic. The great weather, not too warm, but so nice, puts sellers in a great mood, and many seem to almost give stuff away.

My realization about the Memorial Day yard sales came when were on a semi-vacation in Connecticut. On our way to Mystic Seaport, we kept passing all of these yard sales, so of course, we had to stop at a few. There were so many great bargains to be had.

Here is just a few of the great deals I found that day:

High-end name brand children’s clothing at $.25 to $.50 an item. The clothing was hardly used, and it of the best quality. One soft, thick, sweater that cost a quarter has now gone through all three of my kids and still looks brand new. I could probably sell it for $5 or more at a consignment store, if I wanted to.

A baby play yard. It is one of those interlocking gates that you can use outside for corral the kiddies. While I never actually used it for my kids, it has been put into service to keep them away from the fireplace, to section off a kerosene heater when the power went out and more. These systems retail for $70 to $100, and I got it for the bargain price of $2.

Toys and books. Two big boxes of toys and books cost me a mere $3. These were all practically new items, current and in great shape.

A solid wooden dining room table. No particle or pressed board. The table was solid wood and very attractive, with a great finish and carved legs. They let it go for only $15!

What will you find today?
