Miss Julia Hits the Road — Ann B. Ross

This is the fourth installment of the Miss Julia series by Ann B. Ross. As if it wasn’t enough that Sam hired a flirty nurse to take care of him while he recovered from a broken leg, now he has done the unthinkable. As soon as he was up and around again, he bought a Harley-Davidson Road King and parked it in front of Miss Julia’s house, and he wants her to go on a ride with him.

Something is definitely wrong with Sam. He’s been sending her flowers and writing bad poetry, and he’s even taken to wearing cowboy boots. But a motorcycle? That’s just the final straw. No southern lady in her right mind would be caught dead on a motorcycle, and certainly not one of her age. Not that she’s admitting her age, mind you, but let’s just say that she’s too old for a motorcycle.

Something’s wrong with Lillian, too. After some wheedling on Miss Julia’s part, Lillian finally confesses that she just may lose her home. A big developer wants to come in and purchase the entire street where Lillian lives, and if she can’t come up with enough money, she and all her friends will have to move. It’s easy enough to find another place to live, but this is where they raised their children, where their grandchildren come to play, and they all have memories deeply rooted in that neighborhood. It’s breaking Lillian’s heart to think that she might have to leave it all behind, and if Lillian’s heart is breaking, Miss Julia will have something to say about that.

Who would have guessed that Sam’s obsession with his new motorcycle would hold the answer to their problem? When the suggestion is made that they could raise a lot of money by participating in a motorcycle Poker Run, Miss Julia is hesitant, but then she throws her lot in with the rest of them. There has got to be a way to save Lillian’s neighborhood, and if it means holding on for dear life in Sam’s sidecar with her head squished into a helmet, then that’s just what she’ll do. But she will be a lady while she does it, let’s just get that straight once and for all. This book contains some mild language but none that I found offensive.
