Mold, Mold Go Away

In many places the rainy season is on it’s way. April showers bring May flowers, or so I’ve heard, right now there is just a whole lot of dead stuff outside, even with the moisture we’ve had. When the rainy season comes, if you’re not careful you can have mold blooming in your house along with the beautiful flowers outside your house.

The first thing to do is check the grade of the dirt around your foundation. Make sure that the dirt, lawn, flower bed, whatever is there, slopes away from the house. If the ground slopes the other way you are basically funneling water right into your house. This is never a good idea, in addition to moisture problems like mold, the water can weaken the foundation of your home.

Also check gutters and rain spouts to make sure they are not causing water to run down your house or pool around the foundation.

It’s important to make sure mold doesn’t set up housekeeping in your home. Mold can cause a variety of health issues such as asthma and allergies. If you are coughing, wheezing, have itchy watery eyes, mold may be your problem.,

It only takes 24-48 hours for mold to grow if there is enough moisture. Mold loves drywall and once it’s there it can be really hard to get rid of so prevention is key. Be especially vigilant about checking your basement and any closets that are on outside walls.

Mold usually grows in a circular pattern and contrary to popular belief, it comes in many colors including black, brown, white, yellow, pink and bluish green.

If you suspect a problem with mold buy a dehumidifier and keep rooms well ventilated. Also use the bathroom fan after showing. Make sure there aren’t any leaks anywhere and if there are, fix them immediately.

If you can’t get rid of the mold, call a professional. Yes, it can be costly but so can the health problems associated with mold.
