Momma’s on a Diet: Weight Watchers Points System

I’m following the Weight Watchers points system in my weight loss journey. Despite the fact that I’ve followed this path in the past without much success, I’m actually enjoying it this time. I’m not sure why – it’s the same program!

With the Weight Watchers points system all food is allocated a “points” value. This is calculated using some formula that uses both the amount of calories and saturated fat in the item. Each person following the program is allocated a specific number of “points” per day which is calculated depending upon your current weight, and how active your lifestyle is. How you use those points is then up to you.

There are recommendations such as how many servings of fruit/vegetables, how many glasses of water etc that you should have each day, plus advice on how to spread your points out throughout the day, but what you spend them on is up to you. They don’t recommend that you eat too few points, and of course it’s a sin to go over them (unless you’ve saved a few from the previous few days), and so it’s quite an easy program to follow.

What I don’t like about it is that fruit is given a point value. Fruit’s supposed to be healthy and yet most fruits will take 1 point away from my allocation for each fruit I eat – some of them more, not enough of them less! There seems to be an injustice in taking away vital points for something that’s supposed to be good for you! Nevertheless, it’s a great program. I love the flexibility. I love feeling that I’m in control of what I eat – even if it’s within set boundaries. I really like the fact that I’m denied nothing – I can go to McDonald’s for breakfast without feeling guilty, I can eat a bar of chocolate and not hide the wrapper, I can eat anything I fancy – the only restriction is that it must be within my points allocation for the day. I can do this! I am doing this – and I hope to continue doing this right down until my last pound is lost!
