More Fun with Boxes

Are you ready to make more stuff from boxes? Here are a few more ideas:

Building Blocks

You can decorate any size boxes to use as building blocks. What’s really fun is making giant building blocks from large, square boxes. You can also make “bricks” from shallow, rectangular boxes. Your kids will have a blast building castles, walls, forts, and any other ideas their little imaginations conjure up.

Jumbo Dice

Make jumbo dice from medium to large square boxes. Paint them or cut out the dots from felt for a more dimensional effect. For fuzzy dice, first wrap the box in fuzzy fabric then apply dots in a contrasting fabric. You can play dice games you already know or create your own game. Use a drop cloth as a game board and mark off spaces. Make twists and turns and use lots of colors. Each person becomes a game piece and moves around the board when another player rolls the dice. The first person to get to the end of the line of spaces wins.

Instruments

Fill small boxes with un-popped popcorn kernels or dry beans and tape them closed. For a different sound effect, fill some more small boxes with rice or dry peas. These make great shakers, similar to maracas. Make a guitar from a small, rectangular box. If it has a lid, tape the lid closed. Cut a hole in the center of the lid. Stretch large rubber bands over the box from top to bottom. Cut a hole in the top of the guitar and insert the cardboard tube from a roll of wrapping paper (or tape two paper towel rolls together and use them for handle). Attach ribbon or a strip of fabric as a guitar strap. A hatbox (or a coffee can) makes a great drum. Decorate these items as desired so you and your band can rock and roll.
