More of My Extreme Home Makeover

In part One, I gave you some tips for budget-conscious theme decorating. In this blog I will show you how you can decorate with something that your probably already have plenty of in your house.

Another idea I decided to go with, an idea I picked up from one of the home and garden shows, was using family photos as decorations all over the house. I was fortunate that most of my photos were put up high before we evacuated. In fact, I lost just about everything but my photos, my computer and my published articles. What I realized is that I have a lot of photos. Many old photos of my family members and tons and tons of pictures of Tyler. But they were all sitting in photo albums or still in the envelope after I picked them up from being developed. I have even more pictures now, since I bought a digital camera. My idea now is to take some of the pictures I have and decorate with them. Kasabian and Santiesteban also offered some tips on decorating with family photos. Here’s are some of their suggestions:

(1) Group photos on the wall above the sofa or on a mantel to make them the focal point of the room.

(2) Use black and white photos to create a monochromatic palette to blend with a neutral décor.

(3) Devote an entire wall in the living room to display photos.

(4) Use frames with interesting details to add a bit of glamour.

(5) There are no hard rules about the placement of photos. You can arrange them artfully on the wall or group them in clusters. You can also sprinkle them throughout the house, on coffee tables, a bookcase or other nooks and crannies.

I plan to place photos all over, even in the kitchen and bathroom. In fact, I told my contractor I don’t want cabinets on the walls in my kitchen for this very reason.

What I’ve learned so far from this renovating project is that it can be fun and exciting but there is also a lot of planning involved. As I get further along, I’ll share with you other things I learn that hopefully you will be able to use for your home makeover.
