First Lady Laura Bush and President George Bush met at a backyard barbecue at the home of mutual friends and got married three months later? For a first date, they played miniature golf and they married in the same church that Mrs. Bush was baptized in as a baby. Their wedding was a small affair with only 75 guests, no attendants and their wedding invitations were printed by hand.

Harry S. “Give ’em Hell” Truman became president upon the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt on April 12, 1945. President Truman saw a turbulent eight years in office as the world saw the first atomic bombs detonated in Japan and the Cold War ramped up in the years after the end of World War II. President Truman is considered arguably one of the best Presidents the United States ever knew as he advanced civil rights and protected reforms from President Roosevelt to help bring the war-time economy back to a peace time footing. He proposed to Virginia “Bess” Wallace in 1911, but Bess refused. President Truman did not give up and they continued to see each other for years and finally they were married in 1919 – romance and persistence paid off.

President Carter was also turned down the first time he proposed to his future wife Rosalynn Smith. She was only 17 years old when he met and fell in love with her. But a year later, she consented to marry him and they were married in July of 1946. In many ways, the Carters epitomized life in post World War II America. A young, dedicated Lieutenant, President Carter worked aboard a submarine while his wife took up the role of homemaker and focused on raising their children (of which there were 3 sons and 1 daughter).

President Lincoln met his future wife Mary Todd in 1840. She was a cultured, though high-strung woman. They courted for more than 2 years and were finally wed in November of 1842. A week after his wedding, Lincoln is said to have written to a fellow lawyer: Nothing new here, except my marrying, which to me is a matter of profound wonder.
