More States that Will have State-Based Exchanges

stethoscope Part of the Affordable Care Act requires states to have an insurance exchange. People will use the exchanges to find health insurance coverage in 2014. Doing so will prevent people from having to pay a tax for not having insurance. Here is a list of states have started creating an exchange.

When it comes to health insurance exchanges, there are three options. One option is for a state to create its own state-based exchange. Here are more states who decided to do this.

Mississippi
In October of 2011, Mississippi’s elected Commissioner of Insurance, Mike Chaney, announced that the state would establish a Health Insurance Exchange. In June of 2012, the exchange was renamed “One, Mississippi”. On November 14, 2012, Commissioner Chaney issued a declaration letter verifying Mississippi’s intent to implement and operate a state-based health insurance exchange.

New York
Governor Andrew Cuomo signed Executive Order 42 on April 12, 2012, to establish the New York Health Benefit Exchange. On July 9, 2012, Governor Cuomo issued a declaration letter confirming New York’s commitment to the establishment of a state-based health insurance exchange.

Oregon
Governor John Kizhaber signed SB 99 into law on June 17, 2011, establishing the Oregon Health Insurance Exchange. On July 6, 2012, Governor Kizhaber issued a declaration letter verifying Oregon’s commitment to the establishment of a state-based health insurance exchange.

Rhode Island
On September 19, 2011, Governor Lincoln Chafee signed Executive Order 11-09 to establish the Rhode Island Health Benefit Exchange. On July 5, 2012, Governor Chafee issued a declaration letter verifying Rhode Island’s commitment to the establishment of a state-based health insurance exchange.

Vermont
On May 26, 2011, Governor Peter Shumlin signed into law HB 202, which would put the state on a path toward creating a single-payer health care system. As an interim step, the law created the Vermont Health Benefit Exchange to meet the requirements of the Affordable Care Act. On July 9, 2012, Governor Shumlin issued a declaration letter reiterating Vermont’s commitment to the establishment of a state-based Exchange.

Washington
On May 11, 2011, Governor Christine Gregorie signed SB 5445 into law establishing the Washington Health Benefit Exchange. On July 10, 2012, she issued a declaration letter reiterating Washington’s commitment to the establishment of a state-based exchange.
