More Suggestions for Small Spaces

If you have a small apartment or room or live in a dorm room (or perhaps your grown child does), here are some more suggestions and storage ideas that you (or they) can implement to make the most of small spaces.

Purge and Purge Some More

Obviously, the best advice is to get rid of anything you don’t need rather than finding a way to store things you don’t really use. Remember as well that purging is an ongoing chore. When space is limited, you have to constantly re-evaluate and keep only those things that are functional and necessary or that you love dearly.

Choose Furniture that Helps Utilize Space Effectively

Using furniture for more than one purpose or finding great furniture that includes extra storage are perfect ways to make the most of available space. One example is purchasing a great looking filing cabinet so you can also use it as a nightstand or an end table. Another is choosing a bed with a headboard that provides extra storage. Also, with large pieces, choose those that have room beneath them that can be used to store things. There are tons of great under bed storage containers that will help you use this extra space effectively.

Don’t Forget to Use Corners

Remember to fill up those corners. Corner shelves help you utilize what would otherwise be quite a bit of wasted space. Stacking decorative boxes, large hatboxes, or suitcases in a corner are also great ways to get in some extra storage (stacked up suitcases can also double as a coffee table, end table, or nightstand).

Divided Storage

You can purchase shelf and drawer dividers, or make your own, to help you use space better as well. Instead of leaving a drawer half empty because you don’t want to mix bills with other important papers, divide the drawer and use half for each type. Do the same with shelves, so you can use every inch of space.
