More Ways To Have Fun At the Airport

For harried parents traveling with a children or overscheduled business travelers looking to get home as soon as possible, airports are far from fun. Still, if you are using air travel to get from point A to point B, then you have little choice than to spend some time at an airport. So why not make the experience relatively fun?

If you find yourself in any of the following airports in the near future, consider yourself lucky. Travel experts recently ranked them as some of the “Most Entertaining Airports” in the nation:

ANCHORAGE, ALASKA: If you are looking to pass time at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, then go bear hunting. You can start with the airport’s famous polar bear. The seven-foot tall taxidermied animal, which is posed in an upright position and towers over passengers in the North Terminal, is just one of more than a half-dozen stuffed bears at the airport. Other notable wildlife on display throughout the airport includes a ram, a beaver, several geese, a deer, a fox, two wolves, a salmon and a 400-pound halibut.

DETROIT: Detroit Metropolitan Airport—-yes, the same airport where the plane carrying the nut case, who allegedly tried to detonate an explosive device onboard a Christmas Day flight landed—-has a slew of boredom busters, including a fountain designed to represent global travel routes. The massive attraction includes 45 water jets choreographed in changing patterns to symbolize airline flight paths. Longitude and latitude lines are marked in black granite. The water feature is located in Concourse A at the McNamara Terminal. Airport officials say the popular water attraction was installed to offer peace and tranquility in a hectic place. You will have to use some of that inner peace to channel patience, as the crowds that surround the water feature can get pretty large.

CHICAGO: O’Hare International Airport is home to a bevy of unique attractions, including a huge play area for the kiddies. However, it’s The House of Blues store in Midway Airport’s Terminal A that got the most votes from frequent flyers. The store boasts a couple of life-size statues John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd as the Blues Brothers. One set has them dancing in their black suits, sunglasses and hats; while the other set shows them seated. According to airport officials, travelers love to pose for pictures with the funny men.
