Most Important for the Nursery

One of the most important decisions you will need to make when planning a nursery is the type of cot. There are many kinds on the market in many different finishes from paint to stained wood to natural pine. A good idea is buying a cot that can be adapted as the child grows. For example when our daughter was young we bought a pine cot that also had a change table and drawers attached. The deep drawers were a good place to store diapers and other things baby needed when being changed.

Later it could be adapted into a single bed, with a side rail so the child wouldn’t fall out and drawers, then just to a bed and drawers. It made for a functional piece of furniture. To our mind this was a good use of money and saved money later on not having to buy another bed. Cost wise it wasn’t much dearer than buying a cot on its own.

Later we passed the bed on to another family that needed it, but we still have the drawers. They now reside inside our walk in closet. It holds sweaters and other bulky items.

So think carefully about the type of cot and what you want from it and about the color.
I’m not a fan of white, so didn’t want white painted furniture but some of the stained wood looked too heavy for a baby’s room. That’s why we chose pine. But it’s really a matter of preference and what else you decide to put in the room.

Our house at the time didn’t have built in closets, so we also had an old lowboy which had been bought years before at an auction. It had been sanded back and repainted a color to tie in with the mural I painted on the wall.

A simple mural can look very effective and give visual stimulus to a baby. You don’t have to be an artistic genius to produce one. I certainly am not. Otherwise you can buy stick on pictures of Disney characters or animals that can be attached to the wall. This is what we did when our son was born.

The main thing is the nursery is functional, attractive, light, and colorful. Children respond well to primary colors.
