Movies Week in Review – February 11th – 16th

Trying to decide what to rent on your next trip to the video store? Maybe our week in review will help you.

Our first blog of the week was entitled “Movies I Wish I Could Recommend, but I Can’t.” I discussed the films “Notting Hill,” “My Life So Far,” “Because I Said So,” and “Rumor Has It.” Each of these films lured me in with the promise of being good, but they each let me down, big time.

On to happier things . . .

Strictly Ballroom” is a fun mockumentary about the world of ballroom dance and the things that can happen when a renegade dancer decides to break with tradition and (gasp!) bring some of his own steps to the dance floor.

Kate and Leopold” is a romantic comedy about a man from the 1800’s who steps into a time warp and ends up in our day to fall in love with a woman in the corporate world. She then has to make the choice – become vice president of her corporation, or travel back in time to be with him?

The Unsinkable Molly Brown” is the classic movie starring Debbie Reynolds which tells us the highly-dramatized story of the woman who struck it rich, became famous the world over, and then survived the sinking of the Titanic, encouraging the other women to take heart and have courage.

Doris Day stars in “The Pajama Game,” a romantic musical about workers in a pajama factory who want a pay raise. Day is the union leader, and takes her demands to the front office, only to fall in love with the man behind the desk.

“Beaches” is the classic chick lit film starring Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey as women who meet and become best friends as little girls, to find how much they really need and rely on each other as they grow up. The song “Wind Beneath My Wings” was made famous because of this movie.

The Holiday” is a fun romantic movie about two women who trade houses over Christmas and the things they learn about themselves while they’re away from their own familiar surroundings. I suggest you read the full review for content concerns.

Last in our line-up is “High School Musical,” the smash Disney Channel hit. I wasn’t blown away, but it wasn’t a bad way to spend a little bit of time. Definitely geared toward the preteen set.

There you have it – our week in review. Hope you can join us next time around.
