Movies Week in Review – February 18th – 23rd

It’s been a little quiet here in Movies this week, but every movie I reviewed was a winner–you can’t go wrong with any of my selections this time around.

First, I really enjoyed “The Pursuit of Happyness.” Starring Will Smith as a man who can’t seem to support his family, try though he may, you’ll be inspired by our main character’s determination and drive. He rose above his poverty-stricken life to become one of the most successful stock brokers in our nation’s history.

I Could Never Be Your Woman” stars Michelle Pfeiffer as a mature television writer who gets tangled up in a relationship with a slightly less mature actor (Paul Rudd). They start out just flirting, but soon realize that they really care about each other and want more. She has to overcome her objections to their age difference, but in the end, she’s the one who acts the most childish. A cute, romantic film, I do recommend you read the full review for content concerns.

Miss Congeniality” is a comedic suspense about an FBI agent (Sandra Bullock) who goes undercover at a beauty pageant to stop a serial bomber. She’s not used to dressing up – at all – ever, and has to be taught how to wear heels and act feminine. In the end, her own personality shines through as she not only bags the bad guys, but places pretty well in the competition, too.

A touching family film is “Martian Child,” starring John Cusack as a widower who adopts a boy who copes with his abandonment issues by pretending to be from Mars. With a lot of love and reassurance, he comes to accept his place in this world, learning that outer space can’t hold a candle to real love on Earth.

We finished up the week with another great Sandra Bullock movie, “The Net,” about a computer software analyst who runs afoul of a group of cyber-terrorists and has to use her skills to get out of the horrible identity-theft crisis they put her into.

Head on out to the video store to check out these great movies, and have some popcorn for me while you’re at it!
