Moving With Small/Exotic Pets

Moving — whether you’re headed cross-town or cross-country — can be stressful for everyone. Here are some tips to help make a move with small pets, unusual pets, and birds safe and stress-free.

Moving Birds By Car

  • Birds can usually travel in the same cage they use at home.
  • Cover the cage while the car is moving to help keep the bird calm.
  • Make sure the cage gets good ventilation.
  • You may want to remove water dishes from the cage to prevent spills — a water bottle is a good alternate choice.
  • Birds are very susceptible to drafts and quick temperature changes — keep the cage away from open windows and watch exposure to direct sunlight.
  • Be sure to place the cage where it will not tip over.

Moving Small and/or Exotic Pets By Car

  • Small and exotic pets can often travel in the same cage they use at home. You may also be able to use a traditional dog/cat carrier of appropriate size.
  • Make sure the cage gets good ventilation, but is out of direct sunlight. Small pets can overheat quickly.
  • You may want to remove water bowls from cages to prevent spills while traveling — try a water bottle attached to the outside of the cage instead.
  • Some states have very strict regulations about the transport of “wild” animals. Make sure you contact each state you’ll visit in your travels to see if you’ll need any special permits or special arrangements.

Try to keep feeding times the same as they would be at home — this will help keep a sense of regularity and comfort for your pet. Make sure your pet gets access to fresh water every time you stop, especially if the weather is hot. Small pets can get dehydrated very quickly.

Keep in mind that your pet may be upset or frightened by your travels. Give your pets plenty of love and attention during your trip and after you’ve arrived in your new home. Be forgiving of potty accidents and behavioral issues during this stressful time.
