Must Breathe …

window There are certain places in your home that need proper air ventilation. Let’s take a look at some of them.

1. Your shower curtain goes through a lot in a day. It is pelted with water and then pushed back, and the water that hasn’t drained off is trapped between those folds. The water contains bacteria, and this leads to mold. It’s best to pull the curtain closed after you step out and allow the air to circulate freely around both sides to dry that water. Open a window if you can to facilitate the process. If you’re the kind of person who really wants that curtain open, come back in an hour and open in.

2. Your laundry baskets have wet items tossed into them all the time, and you need to make sure that they have access to air. A friend recently shared that a wet white church shirt got put in the bottom of a hamper, and by the time the mother reached it, it had mildewed. The shirt had to be replaced. Don’t use hampers without proper ventilation holes in the sides.

3. Your garbage cans need access to air. You have a plastic can, and then you line it with a plastic sack. If any moisture gets between the can and the sack, and is then trapped by the layers of plastic, that’s a perfect breeding ground for bacteria and mold. Air out your can regularly. Even better, set it outside in the bright sunlight, not only airing it, but allowing the sun to bake it.

4. If you’re like me and enjoy sleeping with your bedroom door closed, be sure to leave the door open during other stretches of the day. If your door is always closed, you are sucking out all the oxygen and not replacing it, and the air is becoming stale and no longer healthy for you to breathe.

Just as our bodies need fresh air to stay healthy, so do our homes. Pay attention to any areas of your home that seem a little musty, have a tendency to form mold, or are in dark corners. Open your windows as often as you can to flush out the old air and bring in the new. If you can, also leave your front door open from time to time. Your house, and you, will be healthier.
