My Life as a Military Wife

I apologize for the dorky title, but since I am new to the military blog, I thought I might tell you a little about myself. I am an older military wife. I met my wonderful Marine husband when I was 32 years old and we married when I was 37.

I grew up with a few military members in my family. My aunt married a sailor, but they lived in Virginia, so I only saw my Uncle on holidays. My dad’s half brother was a Marine in World War II at Iwo Jima, but he was about 20 years older than my dad and died when I was in 7th grade, so I really have no memories of his military experience (if he even talked about it). My second cousin (close to my dad’s age, so I called him Uncle) was in Vietnam. All I remember about his military experience is it was not good. He had nightmares when he returned and drank before he went over there, but came back with a real drinking problem. Overall, I was not very knowledgeable about how things in the military worked.

And honestly, I am still not as knowledgeable as most military wives. I have not been through the things a lot of the younger wives have been through. I have been fortunate enough to not have been on my own during a deployment and I have never had the hassles involved with living on base. I only recently memorized my husband’s social security number (something you should be able to spout off if you intended on doing much of anything on base). I still think my husband is speaking Greek sometimes when he is trying to tell me what is going on at work with all the abbreviations and such!

So, that is about it. Here we are, in our sixth year of marriage, third city, first home we have bought, and had our first (and only) baby. But, don’t think that just because I don’t have much experience as a military wife that I won’t blog a lot. I am very proud of our military and very opinionated about military topics.
