My Yard Goes Disney

Many of my friends are addicted to Home and Garden Television, or HG-TV. I don’t know if any of them are Disney fans, and that’s a shame. Disney website Stitch Kingdom reveals that beginning on June 6, HG-TV will air the new show “My Yard Goes Disney.”

For the show Orlando-area families can sign up in hopes to win an outdoor makeover for their home by Disney designers. Yard decor will be inspired by Walt Disney World and the theme of “family memories.”

That last bit clicked in my mind. It wouldn’t be too difficult to extrapolate why Disney might want to make this show with HG-TV, but the memory theme clinches it. The Disney Parks’ big new marketing scheme revolves around the idea of making family memories that last a lifetime. It’s why the pardoned Thanksgiving turkeys no longer travel to Disneyland (apparently they weren’t up to snuff in memory-making), and this show must be the latest step in the plan.

It’s more likely that marketers for Disney came up with the idea for “My Yard Goes Disney” and pitched it to HG-TV, rather than the other way around. HG-TV and home and garden shows of the ilk the channel airs are getting more and more popular, something of which the lineup for this year’s Epcot Flower & Garden Festival reveals Disney World execs are well aware. HG-TV could come up with any number of new outdoor design shows, but Disney needs the network to cash in on the fad, given that “My Yard Goes Disney” isn’t really fare for the Disney Channel’s main demographic.

Pictures from one of the redesigned yards are here on HG-TV’s website. They do look really cool. I can’t decide, however, if I would want a Disney makeover of anything in my house. I’m not one for design themes. Themes lock you in to only using things that apply to them, and that feels too restrictive for me. I want to be able to put whatever I want in my house or yard and not have to worry if it meshes with the overall oeuvre.

Some of the decorations in the above-linked pictures, however, are neat. My favorite is the little hideaway created inside an over-turned teapot. Pillows for lounging adorn its inside, and just outside the little cave are small wrought iron chairs and a table bedecked with a tea service. In this instance the decorations better be useable and not just for show, otherwise I’d be frustrated at the cool “look but don’t touch” toys every time I glanced into my backyard.

I may not want an actual Disney makeover for my own yard, but that doesn’t mean I don’t love the idea of watching it happen for others. Mostly I’m just addicted to any shows that give me an artistic “before and after;” I love to see the changes made by professional designers.

“My Yard Goes Disney” premieres on HG-TV on Monday, June 6 at 8 p.m. EST.
